Where the data comes from
Place data is compiled and cross-referenced from several public sources:
- Village & settlement names, types and coordinates — Fijian Government GIS data, cross-referenced against OpenStreetMap, Wikipedia (Fiji House of Chiefs) and published province village lists.
- District & sub-district (tikina) names — validated against the Fiji Bureau of Statistics 2017 Census of Population & Housing.
- Province boundaries — open administrative boundary (ADM1) polygon data.
- Road network reference — Fiji Roads Authority road centreline data.
- Health facilities & contact numbers — the Fiji Ministry of Health (health.gov.fj), with locations cross-checked against OpenStreetMap.
- Base map imagery — Esri World Imagery, CARTO and OpenTopoMap.
How places are classified
Each entry is marked as a formally chartered village (koro) or a settlement. Because no single public dataset is authoritative, classifications are cross-referenced across multiple sources, and a number of entries remain under review pending the locality-level results of the 2026 Fiji Census. If you spot an error, please tell us.
Independence
Viti Maps is a free, independent resource and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Government of Fiji or any official agency. The data is provided for general reference and may contain inaccuracies.
